NTSB Factual Report

On February 15, 2017, about 1834 Pacific standard time, a Beechcraft (Beech) F33A, N222EN, lost engine power during cruise flight and made an emergency landing at the Pomona Fairplex, Pomona, California. The pilot/owner operated the personal cross-country flight under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The pilot received minor injuries, and the passenger was not injured. The airplane sustained substantial damage. A visual flight rules flight plan had been filed. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight that departed Selma Airport (0Q4), Selma, California, about 1722, with an intended destination of Cable Airport (CCB), Upland, California.

According to the pilot's written statement, about 10 miles from his destination the Southern California (SoCal) approach controller terminated radar services with the pilot. Up to that point, and a little beyond, the flight had been uneventful. The pilot reported that close to the north boundary for Brackett Field Airport (POC), Laverne, California, Class D airspace, the engine without warning "stumbled, shuddered, and stopped making power." The pilot attempted to troubleshoot the engine without success. He then decided to divert to POC and set up for an emergency landing. The pilot radioed his intent and the POC controller cleared him to land. The pilot stated that at that point he radioed the tower that they were not going to make the runway. The pilot made a forced landing behind the NHRA drag strip East Grandstand. The airplane came to rest upright after it impacted double-stacked picnic tables.
