NTSB Factual Report

On March 6, 2002, about 2300 eastern standard time, a Cessna 172M, N1446V, registered to Airtech Inc., and operated by Palm Beach Flight Training Inc., as a Title 14 CFR part 91 personal flight, impacted a structure while taxiing at Kissimmee, Florida. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed. The private-rated pilot was not injured, and the airplane incurred substantial damage. The flight originated in Lantana, Florida, the same day, about 2230.

The pilot, an Irish citizen, stated in a report to the operator of the airplane that after landing on runway 06 at Kissimmee, Florida, he was taxiing the airplane to the Marathon fixed-base operator, and the left wing tip collided with an unmarked and unlit brick structure, which was located at the edge of taxiway C. The impact damaged the airplane's fuselage and left wing.

This accident was initially reported to the NTSB by the Kissimmee Airport Manager on October 10, 2003. After the NTSB initiated an investigation, the accident was subsequently reported by the operator on October 30, 2003.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain the proper clearance while taxing the airplane which resulted in the left wing tip colliding with an object and damage to the airplane. A related factor was night conditions.
