NTSB Factual Report

On April 28, 2006, about 1332 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 170B, N2891C, registered to and operated by a private individual, experienced a loss of directional control during the landing roll at St Lucie County International Airport, Fort Pierce, Florida. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and a VFR flight plan was filed for the 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight from Marsh Harbour International Airport, Marsh Harbour, Bahamas, to St Lucie County International Airport. The airplane was substantially damaged and the private-rated pilot and one passenger were not injured. The flight originated about 1200, from Marsh Harbour International Airport.

The pilot stated that after takeoff the flight proceeded to the destination airport and was cleared to land straight-in on runway 32. He further reported that at touchdown, a "...large gust pushed from the right side moving airplane off center from runway, but still parallel to runway." He briefly attempted to go-around but the left wingtip collided with a runway marker sign which caused the airplane to yaw to the left. The right main landing gear then separated and the airplane came to rest upright.

NTSB Probable Cause

The failure of the pilot-in-command to maintain directional control during the landing roll.
