NTSB Factual Report

On August 3, 2006, at 1155 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 172S, N124CK, registered to Spirit Aircraft LLC, operating as a 14 CFR Part 91 instructional flight, experienced an on ground collision with an embankment on landing roll out at Thomson-McDuffie County Airport, Thomson, Georgia. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane received substantial damage. The student pilot reported no injuries. The flight originated from Thomson, Georgia, on August 3, 2006, at 1000.

The student pilot stated she was making a full stop landing with full flaps. The airplane touched down on the runway and veered to the left. The student pilot applied right rudder and lost directional control of the airplane. The airplane continued off the right side of the runway into the grass and collided with an embankment. The student pilot stated she did not experience any mechanical problems with the airplane. Examination of the airplane after the accident revealed the engine fire wall was bent.

NTSB Probable Cause

The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll resulting in an on-ground collision with an embankment.
