NTSB Factual Report

On September 20, 2006, at 1100 eastern daylight time, a Mooney M-20J, N201SJ, registered to United States Aviation Consultant, operating as a 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight, collided with trees on landing roll out at Sugar Creek Airpark, Blue Ridge, Georgia. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane received substantial damage. The flight originated from Baldwin County Airport, Milledgeville, Georgia, on September 20, 2006, at 1030.

The pilot stated he arrived in the vicinity of Sugar Creek Airpark about 5 minutes before the accident. Upon arrival he made a low pass down runway 36 and runway 18. The windsock indicated a crosswind condition and he felt more comfortable landing on runway 18. The pilot stated he remained in the traffic pattern for runway 18, touched down long, fast, and with a tailwind. The airplane continued off the runway through the overrun and collided with trees. The pilot stated the airplane did not have a mechanical malfunction or failure and that he failed to touch down at the proper touchdown point on landing.

Examination of the airplane revealed the leading edge of both wings were damaged and the right wing spar was punctured.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to achieve the proper touchdown point on landing resulting in an overrun, and on ground collision with trees.
