NTSB Factual Report

On December 8, 2004, at 1207 Hawaiian standard time, a Piper PA-28-161, N140ND, collided with a runway sign during the landing rollout, following a loss of control at Kalaeloa Airport (John Rodgers Field), Kapolei, Hawaii. University of North Dakota Aerospace Foundation was operating the airplane under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 91. The student pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured; the airplane sustained substantial damage. The local instructional flight departed Kalaeloa, Hawaii, about 1135. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan had been filed. The primary wreckage was at 21 degrees 18 minutes north latitude and 158 degrees 04 minutes west longitude.

The student pilot was conducting her fourth full stop landing during a supervised solo session. She reported that during the landing rollout the airplane veered to the left, and the left wing hit a runway distance sign.

The pilot reported that the airplane had no mechanical failures or malfunctions prior to the loss of control.

NTSB Probable Cause

the pilot's failure to maintain directional control, which resulted in a collision with an obstacle.
