NTSB Factual Report

On November 23, 2002, at 1320 central standard time, a Piper PA-22-108, N4723Z, piloted by a student pilot, sustained substantial damage when it nosed over while landing at the Coffeyville Municipal Airport (CFV), Coffeyville, Kansas. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The solo-instructional flight was being operated under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 91 without a flight plan. The pilot reported no injuries. The local flight departed CFV at 1300 and was returning at the time of the accident.

According to a written statement provided by the pilot, while on landing rollout he "thought [he] saw something on the right side of the runway." The pilot stated he "overcorrected to the left and went off the left side of the runway and the plane overturned." The pilot reported deer had been sighted around the airport the weekend prior to the accident.

A witness to the accident reported the "main gear touched down first then the nose gear. After the aircraft settled, the path of [the] rollout went to the right then left for a short distance then back to the right." The witness reported the "tail [of the airplane] comes up [and] the left main gear leaves the ground, this continues until the right wing tip contacts the runway." The witness stated the propeller struck the ground and the airplane flipped over on its back. The witness made no mention of any wildlife or obstructions on or near the runway.

Several witnesses to the accident reported deer and other wildlife are often present at the airport. None of the witnesses reported any wildlife or obstructions being present at the time of the accident.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot not maintaining aircraft control during the maneuver to avoid an unconfirmed object on the side of the runway.
