NTSB Factual Report

On September 17, 2002, at 1900 central daylight time, a Cessna 150G, N2870S, piloted by a private pilot, was substantially damaged when it landed short of the runway collapsing the nose landing gear and subsequently nosing over. The landing was being made on runway 04 (2,320 feet by 220 feet, turf), at the Dodge Center Airport, Dodge Center, Minnesota. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was conducted in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was not injured. The local flight originated about 1800.

In a written report, the pilot stated that he was practicing short/soft field takeoffs and landings. He stated that on the accident landing, he touched down short of the runway. He stated: "Nosewheel impaled itself in a slight rise of turf runway above surrounding beanfield. Nosegear crunched into cowl and dragged below plane along the turf for 96 [feet] till plane nosed over." The pilot listed no mechanical problems with the airplane.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's misjudgment of distance resulting in an undershoot of the runway.
