NTSB Factual Report

On September 13, 2006, about 1500 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 305A, N5074H, nosed down during the landing roll on runway 30 at Lewistown Municipal Airport, Lewistown, Montana. The private pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The airplane, which was registered to and operated by the pilot, sustained substantial damage. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight. The flight originated from Bozeman, Montana about 1400.

According to the pilot, the wind was from 280 to 320 degrees at 13 knots with gusts to 22 knots. Upon touchdown, the left wing was raised by a gust. The airplane swerved right and then left before coming to rest nose down on the runway.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain aircraft control during landing, which resulted in an inadvertent swerve and nose down. A contributing factor was the gusty wind condition.
