NTSB Factual Report

On December 10, 2004, about 1300 central standard time, a Bellance model 14-19, N6563N, piloted by a private pilot, was substantially damaged when it went off of the left side of runway 29 during takeoff at the Sloulin Field Airport, Williston, North, Dakota. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The pilot was not injured. The local flight was originating at the time of the accident.

In a written report of the accident, the pilot stated that as the tail of the airplane was raised during takeoff, it veered to the left. He stated that he was unable to prevent the airplane from departing the runway. The airplane subsequently struck a runway approach light, collapsing the landing gear and came to rest on the fuselage facing 180 degrees to the takeoff direction. In his written report, the pilot listed no malfunction of the airplane.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain directional control of the airplane during the takeoff roll. A contributing factorwas the approach light.
