NTSB Factual Report

On June 23, 2004, at 1850 eastern daylight time, a Cessna 172P, N65612, was substantially damaged when it impacted the ground after takeoff from the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport (SGH), Springfield, Ohio. The student pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed for the local instructional flight conducted under 14 CFR Part 91.

According to the pilot, the purpose of the flight was to practice touch-and-go landings at SGH. He performed two landings without any problems, and then during climbout of the third approach, the airplane "dropped" and impacted the runway, first on its main landing gear, and then on its nose landing gear.

Examination of the airplane by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector revealed no mechanical deficiencies with the airplane.

NTSB Probable Cause

The pilot's failure to maintain adequate airspeed resulting in a stall and hard landing.
